A member of any of the various North American
Indian peoples who, from about 300 BC, built
earth mounds, linear and conical in shape,
for tombs, temples, and the platforms for
chiefs' houses. They carried out group labour
projects under the rule of an elite. A major
site is Monk's Mound in Mississippi. They
were in decline by the time of the Spanish
invasion, but traces of their culture live on
in the folklore of the Choctaw and Cherokee
Indians.
